Allergy — Novel Protein

An 8 to 12 week elimination trial for dogs with suspected food allergies — whether the symptoms show up as itchy skin, ear infections, or chronic gut issues. The recipe pairs a single "novel" protein your dog hasn't eaten before (pork OR bison — pick one based on what they've had previously) with uncommon carbohydrates (sweet potato and rutabaga). A targeted blend of skin-supporting oils helps repair the skin barrier. The trial only works if you stick to it strictly — even a small amount of an excluded food can throw off the results.

Notes & guidance

  • · Provides ~26% of energy from protein, ~52% from fat, and ~22% from carbohydrate.
  • · Pork and bison are isocaloric at the gram weights shown and can be substituted 1:1 — but pick only ONE per trial.
  • · Sweet potato + rutabaga is a highly digestible, uncommon carbohydrate base that minimizes confounding sensitivities.
  • · EFA blend (fish + flaxseed/borage + high-linoleic safflower) supports epidermal barrier repair and dampens TH2-mediated cutaneous inflammation.
  • · No eggs, no dairy, no grain, no beef/chicken/lamb/wheat/soy — reduces cross-reactive antigen risk.

Feeding instructions

  1. 1Cook the chosen protein (pork OR bison) thoroughly — bake or sauté until no pink remains. Drain excess fat.
  2. 2Cook the sweet potato and rutabaga until soft for easy digestion.
  3. 3Mix the daily portion together with the supplements in one batch, then divide across two meals.
  4. 4Add the oils, iViBlend, and bone meal AFTER cooling — do not heat the supplements.
  5. 5Run a strict 8-week elimination trial with NO other protein, flavored medications, or table food.
  6. 6Rechallenge with the previous diet after remission to confirm an adverse food reaction diagnosis.
  7. 7Refrigerate up to 3 days, or portion and freeze for up to 2 months.

Important — please read

Elimination trials require strict compliance to be diagnostic — even a small amount of an excluded protein can invalidate the trial. Use only under the advice of a veterinarian or veterinary dermatologist. Discuss any flavored medications, chews, or treats with your vet before starting.
