Home-Prepared Healthy Puppy Diet Recipe
This healthy puppy diet plan is designed to be approximately 500 kcals and the diet is made to be specific for puppies and substitutions may cause nutrient deficiencies and should be strictly adhered to. The average puppy between 8-16 weeks should receive 2.5-3 times the resting energy based on weight; for example a 7 kg puppy fits this equation RER= 30(7kg) + 70 = 280kcals and 2.5 times this amount is 700 kcals. From 16-24 weeks that average dog will often require 2-2.5 times the resting energy based on the current kilograms in BW, hence a 14 kg dog would require RER=30(14 kg) +70 = 490 kcals; times 2 which is closer to 980 kcals. By the time the average dog is around 5-7 months depending on breed, they will no longer need further kcal escalation to maintain good body weight. Of course, every dog is different, and you should work with your vet to increase or decrease the amount of diet below to fine tune your dog’s weight as they grow. All dogs can transition to one of our adult recipes by 9 months of age except for Giant breeds which can stay on a puppy plan until 12 months of age, and small toy breeds can transition to an adult plan by around 6-7 months of age. Monitor your dog and consult with your veterinarian if there your puppy is gaining to much weight or not gaining enough – we recommend regular weigh-ins with your vet after starting a home prepared diet.
Daily Diet to consist of: (500 kcals of diet)
6 ounces of pan browned ground 95% lean ground beef (170 grams) OR 7 ounces (200 g) pan browned 99% lean ground turkey OR 8 ounces (225 g) of baked tilapia (weights after cooking)
½ cup (110 grams) of cooked quinoa or brown rice.
½ cup (90 grams) of cooked chopped broccoli, spinach, green beans or carrots
1 teaspoon (2 grams) of sesame, vegetable or safflower oil
½ teaspoon (2 grams) of fish oil
ADDED SUPPLEMENTS:
1 scoop of iViBlend
2 teaspoons of Bone Meal Powder (Kal brand or similar)
This daily portion is usually mixed together with the supplements and fed over two to three meals per day. The supplements can be gradually added in over a 7 day period if your dog is picky as healthful supplements of this nature can alter the taste and acceptability of diets for more picky eaters, and a gradual introduction often prevents food refusal.
These diets are only to be used under the advice of a veterinarian. Please consult a vet or vet nutritionist on whether this is appropriate for your dog before feeding. Even though this recipe has been designed by board-certified veterinary nutritionists, your dog's unique calorie requirements, medical history, and diet history can all affect whether it is the best option for your dog.
Happy Feeding!
